Omni Tend vs Square

Square and Omni Tend compared for a UK shop, cafe or pub: card rates and monthly fees, Plus plans, Square Shifts, selling by weight or the metre, and where each company is based. Checked 23 October 2026.

Square is a till many people have seen on a counter: a free app, a reader, and a card rate on every tap. It is owned by Block, Inc., a US company. For a cafe or a stall that sells whole things it is hard to beat on price to start, and over the last few years it has grown a rota product, Square Shifts, an online shop, Square Online, and paid Plus tiers for retail and restaurants, with stock counts and purchase orders on the retail one.

Omni Tend is a single system rather than a family of them: the till, the web shop, the stock in kegs and metres, the purchase orders, the rotas and the daily checks on one login for one monthly fee, built and supported in Suffolk.

Pick Square if

  • You sell from a counter, by the each or by weight with a scale, and want no monthly software fee to start (a reader is from £19 plus VAT, then the card rate).
  • You want a reader your customers recognise and are happy to add Plus plans and Square Online as you grow.
  • Your staff already know it.

Pick Omni Tend if

  • You sell by the pint, the metre or the kilo and want the stock to be right.
  • You want purchasing, rotas, training and daily checks in the same system as the till, not as separate products.
  • You want to keep your own card provider and its rates, with no markup from the till.
  • You would rather ring the people who built it, in the UK.
